At the foot of his bed.

May 20th, 2007 by Johanna

YL: I arrived at the hospital at on Friday at 3ish with Emma and Eliot. We meet up with Grandma Mary, Mommy, Kate and Ethan. The plan was for all the family to get their bone marrow typed. We got the luxury of an escort through the buildings secure bridge system over to the Jimmy Fund building; it was raining. After finding the correct area/lobby we all got blood drawn. The boys with the boys the girls with the girls, I went first so Eliot could watch. I made it out to be no big deal and when it was Eliot’s’ turn he too didn’t finch. In hindsight I would pay a small fortune to have seen his face. Emma on the other hand had a tough go of it.

It was then up to the room where we all partied with some pizza. It was sad to see Johanna leave but for Ethan was worse. He latched on and requested that Katie stay behind, and she did, and when Ethan fell asleep, nothing was going to get her to leave the room.. I took a while to talk her into leaving; going over how tired he was when he said it… and, Katie, you will be happy to know he forgot all about it in the morning. Just like he will forget telling me to sleep at the end of the bed tonight (sat).

Guys weekend officially started at 7:30 with Ethan having an accident in his pull-up. This lead to another just after that, 20 minutes later he was on the potty for the first of 9 visits to the bathroom for diarrhea. The doctors are worried that the antibiotics he is taking is killing the good bacteria in his stomach, at al. causing the diarrhea. Ethan was also very tired we didn’t do much but watch DVD’s together. Power Rangers SPD Disc 2 and Toy Story 23, wait typo Toy Story 2, 3 times.

Early afternoon, I forget when we were visited by my Dad and his girl friend, then a couple hours after that Papa Hank and Uncle Nathan. It was another party, or Birthday it seem as Ethan was once again showered with gifts. Even when he was awake he was a little out of it, he is getting benadril every 6 hours to stave off the effects of one of the antibiotics that his is giving him red-man’s disease. It’s causing his skin to turn red and itch.

After the company left we were both tired and I was hungry. Hooked him up with cheese-its and Cheaper by the Dozen and had someone cover for me while I got some food in the lobby. When I came back he had been crushing the cheese-its in to dust so it wouldn’t hurt his throat, then in the middle of my dinner, he in a panic had an accident and in the process spilled the dusty bowl all over himself and the bed. He wanted me to change his pull-up in the bed but then really had to go so off to the bathroom it was, only the trip made him get sick all over the bathroom floor. So picture my half eaten dinner, a filthy bed, filthy bathroom and a boy so tired can hardly sit up on the toilet and im unphased, undaunted with one thought on my mind, this is exactly what I signed up for.

You’ve never seen such a cozy bed I doubled up on the sheets for added comfort, same with the pillows. I replaced every last sheet. I brushed his shirt off hand cleaned the bathroom floor and just like that you could see his spirits rise well maybe I couldn’t’ see it but after a day of taking his tiredness out on me he told me a joke and then minutes later after the movie ended with his finger on the tv off button he told me to go up to the tv and turn the channel. His smile was beaming so I did, he thought it was hilarious, then it was toilet paper basketball into the basket. He was elated every time he hit a basket, more light saber fights with him as drath vador and me as luke with his new action figures and as quickly as it all started it ended with him handing me his sound. I laid at the foot of his bed and rubbed his back. That’s when he told me, as uncomfortable as I was, that he wanted me to sleep there for the night.
